Harriet Shelton
Director Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships - Policy expert, nature lover, and busy mum of two
“I love bringing people together to solve issues, communicate ideas, and build strong relationships to collectively make a difference.”
Harriet Shelton returned to local government in late 2024 after more than four years in central government. With a career spanning eight different councils – four in New Zealand and four in London – Harriet brings a wealth of experience to her role at LGNZ.
She began her career as a planner, just after the Resource Management Act was introduced, before moving into transport planning and policy. Her most recent role at the Ministry of Transport reinforced her passion for connecting technical challenges with real people and finding solutions that work for everyone.
Harriet believes local government is where the "real work" happens since it’s closely connected to communities. She’s proud of the tangible results seen across the country, from safer streets to welcoming libraries, and values the small wins that all contribute to building strong, liveable communities.
In her role at LGNZ, Harriet is focused on fostering strong, positive relationships across local government, with iwi Māori, and partner organisations. She believes in the strength of working together and sees healthy differences of opinion as a way to strengthen the sector.
Outside of work, Harriet is a busy mum to two teenage girls. She enjoys good food and wine, film, travelling, and arts and crafts. She’s also an avid reader, often under the watchful eyes of cats, Jake and Elwood who have the family wrapped around their little paws.
