Submission on the Inquiry into Community-led Retreat

We welcome the opportunity to submit on the Inquiry into community-led managed retreat and adaptation funding. Local government is at the frontline of climate change adaptation. Under the current system, councils are responsible for assessing and responding to natural hazard risk through land-use planning decisions, which includes taking steps to mitigate risk in certain cases. They also support communities to respond to and recover from emergency events. Increasingly councils are bearing the brunt of failing infrastructure due to the impacts of climate change.
