2010 World Mayor Prize
The international City Mayors organisation is seeking nominations for the 2010 World Mayor Prize. Since 2004 the Prize has honoured mayors with the vision, passion and skills to make their cities incredible places to live in, work in and visit.
This is a great way to show the contribution local government makes to our cities and communities, and the power of mayors and councils to make an impact for their residents.
The 2008 Prize went to Executive Mayor Helen Zille of Cape Town, South Africa, out of 820 nominees and a shortlist of 50 voted on by 205,000 people. In 2006 it went to John So, Lord Mayor of Melbourne, but so far no Kiwis have taken home the prize.
New Zealanders are represented by some fantastic, effective Mayors who deserve to have their work acknowledged. At the same time, having one of our own recognised on the world stage would definitely send the message that local government has a vital role to play.
The World Mayor Project encourages members of the public to nominate mayors who they think are absolutely world-leading in the service they give to their local communities. It would be fantastic to see a New Zealand mayor take home the prize in 2010.
