New KnowHow courses in 2010

In 2010 the Local Government KnowHow professional development programme for elected members is expanding to include two exciting new courses: Decision Making and Asset Management.

The KnowHow programme is designed to help elected members improve their knowledge and skills to best fulfil their role in the community. The programme, which kicked off in April this year with Financial Governance 101, is a joint initiative between Local Government New Zealand, Department of Internal Affairs and Society of Local Government Managers.

Elected members are all doing an important job using the variety of skills that they bring from different life experiences, but there are some distinct skills they need to possess to carry out their duty to the public. The KnowHow courses meet this need by offering tailor-made courses to help elected members make decisions that will positively impact on their communities for years to come.

With the Government's proposed changes to the Local Government Act 2002 being rolled out from late 2009, good local decision-making will be more important than ever. 'Decision Making' will be touring the country from February 2010 and course places are now available!

Asset Management offers critical skills to elected members who are entrusted by the community to manage the region's community infrastructure assets. Participants will learn about the key asset life cycle strategies and much more. If you are an elected member we strongly encourage you to register for this important course today!

We all know that financial decisions and oversight are more important than ever in this economic climate. ‘Financial Governance 101' will be rolled out again in 2010. This course aims to enhance elected members' financial planning skills for the long-term benefit of their communities.

Registration is now open for the full suite of courses. Dates, venues and further information is available at www.lgnz.co.nz/knowhow.
